Peter the Slayer
Acts 10/11 Peter the Slayer
"10:12 Wherein were all manner of fourfooted beasts of the earth, and wild beasts, and creeping things, and fowls of the air."
"13 And there came a voice to him, Rise, Peter; kill, and eat."
11:7 And I heard a voice saying unto me, Arise, Peter; slay and eat.
8 But I said, Not so, Lord: for nothing common or unclean hath at any time entered into my mouth."
So to God, the gentiles were dogs, wild beasts, pigs, bugs, camels, rabbits, lizards, and flying fowls. Oh yeah, snakes. That's almost funny for people who think so highly of themselves.
These are all the "unclean" animals listed in the Torah by Moses. Probably other critters too.
It is interesting how God types so many things after the animals He created. For Himself He uses lamb, lion, eagle (prophets).. ➡️ I have not found an animal yet that specifically represents Israel.
Eagle is interesting. Prophets are compared to eagles since they fly high and have that excellent vision, spiritually speaking. We often hear how wonderful eagle prophets are. But according to the Torah, they are an unclean bird.
However, GoogleAI shares, "No, prophets are not called eagles in the Bible, but eagles are used as a symbol of power and God's handiwork. However, the eagle is used to represent John the Evangelist, and Isaiah 40:31 is a verse that compares those who trust in God to eagles."
Eagles might be for a later post.
An important Scripture says that God can make some of these gentiles clean. That is important to Peter the Slayer.
"7 And I heard a voice saying unto me, Arise, Peter; slay and eat. 8 But I said, Not so, Lord: for nothing common or unclean hath at any time entered into my mouth. 9 But the voice answered me again from heaven, What God hath cleansed, that call not thou common." Acts 11
God symbolically by vision brought down a sheet filled with unclean gentiles, or animals. God told Peter to slay and eat them." Peter said no! Wooo, talk about grace. John the Baptist's dad did a lot less than that and lost his voice for nine months!
Wait. God said He had already cleansed these men that were coming to Peter's house.
8 "But I said, Not so, Lord: for nothing common or unclean hath at any time entered into my mouth." .. (though some pretty unclean verbal things have come out. Peter is known as the cussing Preacher, pre-Pentecost.)
At this point I have no insight on why God said "slay" "kill" then eat. ?? Maybe verse 15 "And as I began to speak, the Holy Ghost fell on them, as on us at the beginning." I don't know.
11:16 "Then remembered I the word of the Lord, how that he said, John indeed baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost.
17 Forasmuch then as God gave them the like gift as he did unto us, who believed on the Lord Jesus Christ; what was I, that I could withstand God?"
18 When they heard these things, they held their peace, and glorified God, saying, Then hath God also to the Gentiles granted repentance unto life."
So Peter the Slayer went and spoke to these people what he knew "And the apostles and brethren that were in Judaea heard that the Gentiles had also received the word of God."
And what did they do? "Can any man forbid water, that these should not be baptized, which have received the Holy Ghost as well as we?
And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord. Then prayed they him to tarry certain days." Acts 10:47,48
There is Acts 2 again. Proper baptism.
I guess we could say that Peter told the truth, which slayed their unbelief (via God), and Peter could then fellowship or "eat" with them in fellowship in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ.
It is very important to note that it was God that cleaned or justified them first, which made them desirous to hear from Peter the words that God could then quicken.
22 "And they said, Cornelius the centurion, a just man," (before he met Peter)
Cornelius "A devout man, and one that feared God with all his house, which gave much alms to the people, and prayed to God alway." Acts 10:2 (before he met Peter)
Here is a pattern : God prepares a person first. Then they hear the Truth, Word. They believe and discard their unbelief. Then the last two parts are water immersion and Spirit immersion. This returns fellowship with God and the benefit of God's People.
